A few hundred years ago, the Maldives' Sultan found that his jewellers had stolen gold from the royal treasury. As a punishment, the Sultan exiled his jewellers to the remote island of Rinbudhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, where he traded his jewellery-making skills for food and shelter with the locals.
According to folklore, the island's residents cherished this expertise and passed it down from generation to generation, maintaining this old method of jewellery creation. Rinbudhoo was labelled as "Jewellers' Island" on British naval charts from the nineteenth century, and it remains thus to this day.
